The General Data Protection Regulation sets out to protect personal data such as address and phone number.
To avoid falling foul of the rules the ETA recommends that self-employed therapists leave it up to clients/patients/ their guardian to get in touch, rather than getting in touch with them on a teacher’s or someone else’s request.
If you are employed by an organisation – school or clinic this is different: you call/write as a representative from that institution to which the client has already given consent for their data to be used.
It is good practice to produce a contract with a new client where you specify how you use/ protect data. See the example below (feel free to adapt).
